Spartan Division of the Burlington Northern
The Spartan Division is a proto-freelanced layout of the Burlington Northern reflecting the results of rejecting the proposed merger with the Santa-Fe.
The layout is a round the wall layout consisting of 200 feet of dual mainline with staging yards at Omaha and Portland/Long Beach. The majority of operations take place in Nebraska.
The layout is mounted to the walls, constructed over 3/4 inch plywood frame, 1/2 inch plywood and 1/2 inch homasote. The mainline is mounted on cork roadbed. The majority of the turnouts are Peco with some Altas and Shinohara crossovers. Except for the peninsula all curves have a 36 inch radii. The track is all code 100 and the scenery is extruded foam covered with plaster cloth and ultra-light plaster.
Scenery is approximately 50% complete. The backdrop is 100 % complete and was professionally painted by Norm Logan. It contains over 50 kit and kit-bashed structures.
The layout is powered and controlled by a Digitrax DCC System with plug-in controllers.
