Triangular Ties - Joel Goldberg
 

This is a two-part Clinic. Part one describes the triangular railroad cross ties produced in Montana for use on the Great Northern Railway. The ties are described and the concept for their use is presented. The second portion of the Clinic presents the particulars about the Somers Lumber Company and its history. Details of the mill and its grounds are shown.

 

Joel Goldberg has been involved in HO gauge models for over 50 years. His current railroad’s theme is industry and lumbering during the late steam era. An article about the triangular railroad ties has been accepted for publication by Trains Magazine.  Joel is a retired teacher of electronics. He lives in West Bloomfield, Michigan with his wife, Elizabeth.

 
 
Creating City Streets with Sintra
 

What is Sintra and what is it good for? Come in and find out why it is a neat, easy-to-use alternative to many commonly used methods of making city streets. Includes some basic guidelines for modeling urban streets that are applicable to most methods of street construction.

Last Two Inches

 
Ideas" and techniques for making optimum use of the last two inches of space on the back of your layout. This will cover both urban and rural scenes. Coverage includes spray painting clouds and sky; how to handle blending streets and commercial backgrounds, building flats and partial buildings; and using mirrors. How to create believable dept of field in your modeling effort. Lots of props and a Handouts.
 
Jack Ellis primary model builder and design consultant at Bar Mills Scale Model Works.  He is a well established modeler very well know for his attention to detail and quality and he is a very respected modeller and NMRA Contest Judge.

On Saturday morning we will be holding Model Railroading 101 - a complete track dedicated to helping anyone interested in the hobby get going on a layout. Even if you've been in the hobby for a number of years this track will give you the spark to try something new. Planned topics include:

Using Photoshop for Model Railroading #1 & #2

 

#1 - Basic Photoshop for Model Railroaders; This clinic has drawn critical acclaim for the past three years. You will be "wowed", you will laugh, you will be entertained, and you will learn the basic techniques of Photos shop for creating signs of the layout, decals for your models, among other modeling needs. You will also learn how to prepare your digital photos for publication on the internet and for the printed press. The basic techniques of balancing contrast, brightness, color saturation, hue, focus and sharpness, resizing images, and parallax correction.

 

#2 - Creating Backdrops with Photoshop;  This clinic shows how backdrops are created using digital photography and Photoshop. Methods and techniques are demonstrated and explained, such as splicing together photos from different scenes, sizing, setting color saturation, printing, etc. This is one of Jim's most popular clinics and will amaze and entertain everyone attending this clinic.

 

Jim Six has been a model railroader since the early 1950s.  Jim has had more than 275 articles published in the model railroad press. He is currently Superintendent of the NMRA MWR Michiana Division.

 


 
Basic Model Photography
 
Digital photography allows the use to quickly and easily see 'what's going on' and created photos with a simple, interactive approach.  This clinic will show you how to do that with any camera.
 
Howard Andrews is a member of NCR Division 6.  His photography has appeared in national publications including Darkroom Techniques, Playboy, and Model Railroader.
 

 
Modeling Prototypical Scenery - John Bussard
 

First Hour;  Planning your scene, Scenery supports, Rocks and outcropping from rock molds, roads, Cementing all elements together, Painting rocks.

 

Second Hour;  Applying textures, and textures over textures, Making trees and bushes from sisal rope (must see clinic)

 

Third Hour;  Super detailing scenery, and you thought you were done with just grass, track, and roads.

 
John Bussard started model railroading in 1959 when he received his first Revell HO Train Set, he was nine years old. Scenery has always been one of his main interests in model railroading providing a purpose and stage for the running of a model railroad. John has presented his clinics on scenery at multiple NMRA National conventions, the most recent being this past summer at the 75 Anniversary in Milwaukee

Operations For Newbies
 
With more and more layout owners offering operations on their layouts new crew members need to build skills to operate like an “old hand”. This is a review of the unspoken “rules” of model railroad etiquette with tips and friendly advice to raise your operational skill level.  Old and new crewmembers will benefit from this session.
 
Norm Logan a Modeler for forty-something years, now that he has more time since his retirement after 34 years of teaching and directing high school bands and orchestras he enjoys OPS sessions and working on his layout.  Norm is a member of NMRA North Central Region Div 6 and OPSIG.
 

 
Virtual Model Railroading
 
This clinic will demonstrate how to create a virtual model RR using computer programs currently available.
 
Running A Virtual Model Railroad
 
This clinic will operate the virtual model RR Bill created in the previous clinic.
 
Bill Gawthrop grew up watching steam in full operation on the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad running through his home town pulling mixed passenger and freight trains as well as coal drags.  Bill was introduced to model railroading with an American Flyer set.  He began scale modeling in the late 1950’s with his first version of the HO scale Coal & Coke Railroad.
 

 
Styrofoam Rock Clinic
 
In this Clinic you will learn the techniques to build very believable rock formations from pink Styrofoam.  In this live demonstration clinic, shows all you need to know about the construction, carving, painting and finishing of rock formations, hills and cliffs for your railroad.  It will also touch on accessing hidden track within your newly formed Styrofoam mountain ranges.  Handouts will be available at the clinic.
 
Greg Rich has enjoyed model building since he received his first Lindberg plastic airplane at the age of 6. For the past 34 years he's been captivated by Model Railroading and all its facets.  He enjoys building just about anything, with Scenery, rolling stock, structures and ship models for the RR holding a special fascination.
 

 
Creating Realistic Models
 
This clinic is designed for those building layouts or shelf models. The basic techniques of freight car and locomotive modeling are examined but we don't stop there. Creating roads into the backdrop, painting and weathering structures, modeling signs, building siding and foundations, kitbashing structures and more. All is based on various prototype subjects. Whether you build models for display or are building a layout, this is a must attend clinic.
 
Jim Six is building his 7th HO-scale layout based upon the New York Central Michigan Branch, a former Big Four line in northern Indiana. Jim is in his third career as an Engineering Manager in the trailer business building trailers for the military, the race car industry, and various industrial applications.
 

 
History of & Modeling American Gas Stations
 
The title pretty much says it all. A photo history of the gas station in North America followed by some tips that may help modelers build a more realistic model of one. Ending with a look at common, unusual, or just plain wacky gas stations. Sit back, relax and just enjoy the photos. Most of the modeling tips are useful to all eras and style of stations being modeled.

Structure Lighting With LEDs
 
Learn how to make your structures more interesting by lighting them up with LEDs. In this clinic Bill Sartore will cover everything you need to know to get you started off using LEDs. Topics include power supplies, wiring methods, LED selection, advantages/disadvantages of LEDs, and the tools you’ll need to work with them. Learn how to make a working goose-neck lamp with a micro LED and hypodermic tubing. Additional topics include some dos and don’ts for structure lighting as well as quick and easy tips for adding interior details.
 
Bill Sartore has enjoyed model railroading for most of his life.  With a passion for structures, and limited space in his house, Bill enjoys the challenge of craftsman kit building and kit-bashing, diorama construction, and small switching layouts. Armed with enough knowledge of electronics to keep him from getting electrocuted, Bill likes to bring his structures to life by adding lights and interior details.
 

 
Hands On LED Workshop - Fee $20 per attendee, limit 10
 

Bill will walk the attendee though the process of adding lighting to a track side shanty.  Clinic fee include shanty kit and lighting supplies.  Attendees should bring a 15 watt and 30 watt soldering iron if they have them.

 


 
Estate Planning For The Modeler
 

This clinic will provide you with a basic understand of the steps you need to take to help your family care for and possibly dispose of your model railroading empire when you are no longer around to keep it running.  None of us what to think of this – but we all need to plan for it.

 

Charles Clos Esq. practices Probate Law in Michigan. He has extensive experience in handling estate planning from simple wills to complex trusts.

 


 

Painting Museum Quality Backdrops
 

If you are tired of flat blue walls and interested in having an effective backdrop for your layout this is the clinic for you. Painting a backdrop can be the quickest way to add a lot of scenery to your model layout in the shortest amount of time.  It’s also a great way to unify all of your scenic ideas and give focus to your modeling theme. The clinic will cover preproduction choices and backdrop painting techniques. We will go over materials and the steps to help you have a backdrop that will enhance your layout and models.

 

Norm Logan models his HO Michigan Southern freelance railway in Northville Michigan.   As amember of the RAILGANG, he enjoys Friday night group meetings where they help each other build and operate member’s layouts.  Norm has painted numerous backdrops for layouts of all scales in private homes, stores, and museums. To date he has painted over 1000 feet of railroad backdrops. Pictures of his layout backdrops have appeared on the pages of MR.

 


 

Wheathering Workshhops - Fee $5.00
 

This is an all-day workshop where participants sit down and weather models under supervision of Chris Thompson, Ryan Folk, and Jim Six. Participants will be shown how and will try various techniques for easily applying weathering for great results. This is your opportunity for real hands-on learning led by some of the hobby's most experienced modelers.

 

Presentors

   - Jim Six

   - Chris Thompson - Chris has been a model railroader since the 1960s and presently "drives" trains as an engineer for Norfolk Southern between Elkhart and Chicago. Chris plans to model the former Conrail Elkhart and Western branchlinein HO-scale. Chris specializes in painting, detailing, and weathering models. He also instructs DCC and sound installation and programming at various hobby events. Chris is Asst. Superintendent of the NMRA MWR Michiana Division.

   - Ryan Folk - Ryan has been a model railroader since late 1980s and is modeling a proto-freelanced HO-scale railroad set in northwest Indiana. Ryan is a technician at Comcast. While younger than many of us, Ryan is expert with painting and weathering models. He has led weathering workshops for the NMRA North Central Region convention at Ft. Wayne in October 2009, and at the 2010 Great Lakes Model Railroad Symposium this past April. Ryan is an active member of the NMRA MWR Michiana Division.
