The layout is a 3 level freelance track plan in a 20 x 23 area of a basement in the shape of a "E" and consists of 175 feet of mainline track. The “Grandpa Division” of the Great Northern Railway is a design going across the northern United States. More than 50 first generation diesel engines are featured for power. The Great Northern Railway interchanges with many western railroads along its route across the United States. The layout has cities, industries and yards along the main line and has two major staging yards and three minor staging yards off the layout.
The railroad includes operations involving freight trains, passenger trains and local industry switching trains. Industries and transportation movement include: fruit and vegetable perishables, livestock, iron ore and coal, a variety of wood and metal products production, chemicals and gases, finished meat products, agriculture products (from field to finished products, cement, timber, power generation, icing operations for refrigerator cars, water treatment, rail car repair and a car ferry.
Besides the GN Railway, operations include the following railroads: NP, SP&S, MIL, DM&IR, GB&W, RI, CB&Q, and UP. Several industries have their own engines also.
This layout is under construction and is controlled by the NCE DCC system.
