Central Division
The Reading Lines-Central Division is a proto-freelanced layout. The track plan is totally fictional, towns are named for real places the Reading served. Locomotives and rolling stock are appropriate for what the Reading used during the time period modeled.
Benchwork is open grid with roadbed 1/2" plywood, a plywood and Homasote combination or in some areas 1x boards. Mainline tracks are mounted on cork roadbed with sidings and yard tracks laid directly on the Homosote or plywood roadbed. Track is Atlas code 100, turnouts are Shinnohra with some Atlas in the staging yard. Minimum radius is 28" with most at 30". Turnouts are powered by Micromart SwitchMaster motors and controlled by toggle switches on local panels.
Track power is supplied by a CVP Rail Command system with plug-in stations around the layout..
Scenery was constructed using basic, tried & true methods. Landforms are made from Styrofoam that has been carved and covered with plaster that has latex paint mixed in to give it color. Ground foam and foliage clumps, real ground-up autumn leaves, and real shifted dirt make up the ground cover. Trees are made from dried flower materials and Sedum. Evergreens are from old artificial Christmas tree branches sprinkled with ground foam. Roads are formed with cardboard painted either a light gray for asphalt or almond for concrete, then weathered. Concrete joints and cracks are drawn on using a black ballpoint pen.
The backdrop is sheet aluminum of the type used to side houses. This material curves around corners easily and comes primed with a white basecoat that’s easily painted over.
