SOLANO
1879-1930
The model that brought back forgotten history.
One of the largest and busiest train ferries in the world, and sailed as part of the SP’s double track mainline Transcontinental Route between Sacramento and San Francisco for 51 years.
The Solano was making 36 to 46 trips across the mile wide Carquinez Strait every 24 hours carrying complete passenger and freight trains including the locomotives and the “Boat Goat” ( 0-6-0 switcher).
It took 3 people 15 years of research and 4 years to build this radio controlled museum model. See the boat dock and the trains depart.
The model has inspired historical, train, and ship articles, and a PBS “California’s Gold” program.
*** The awesome model will be showcased in the registration room at the convention site ***
