Division 6 History

Prior to 1980 the division encompassed Macomb, Oakland, St. Clair and Wayne counties.  It was home to 800 + members.  Although it had all these members listed it showed little activity and both the NMRA & NCR (North Central Region) officers were concerned.  In March 1980 a meeting was held at which it was decided Division 6 as it was would be split into 3 seperate subdivisions.  These subdivisions would have aproximetly 250 members each and would be Oakland; Macomb/St. Clair and Wayne named after their respective counties.  The Wayne Subdivision began having monthly meetings at the Saints Simon & Jude Church in Westland and started planning their first event for November 1980.  It would be a 4 hour Model Railroad show.  The show attrached 500+ attendees and was such a success a spring show was planned for April of the following year.  These events sparked a slight increase in memberships and the trend continued for the November 1981 show, which was another raving success.  The Wayne subdivision started to gain momentum and fellowships started to form so discussion began on taking the subdivision to the next level and form an full division from the subdivision.  In early 1982 officers from the 3 local subdivisions held a meeting at which it was decided the three subdivisions would form two full NMRA Divisions.  The Wayne Subdivision became the present day full Division 6 encompassing only Wayne county.  Oakland, Macomb & St. Clair counties became the present day Division 8.

This history came from a letter printed in the Summer 1982 edition of the NCR Hotbox.  The letter was written by two officers at that time, Superintendent Roger E. Parry and Assistant Superintendent Lou Lapham.
