What is Division 6?
We are the 6th Division of the North Central Region (NCR) of the National Model Railroad Association (NMRA), look to the right for detailed description of the NMRA. What is our purpose? Our purpose is to further the goal of the National Model Railroad Association, Inc. and the North Central Region of the National Model Railroad Association, Inc. to further the hobby of model railroading by promoting fellowship and social activities and the interchange of ideas among individual model railroaders and club organizations within the divisional area. The above statement is a bit bland, so let's put it in better context. Our mission is to harbor increased popularity of the World's Greatest Hobby and make sure everyone involved is informed and has loads of fun! |
What is the NMRA?
The National Model Railroad Association (NMRA), an organization of model railroaders, advances the worldwide scale model railroading community through education and standards as well as advocacy and fellowship. The NMRA is a non-profit educational association whose purpose is both to promote the hobby of model railroading, and to help set standards within the industry, it's Headquarters is in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The NMRA is people - people across the globe, people in your area, and people just down the street who love model railroading and want to help others get that same enjoyment out of the hobby. Being a member entitles one to a multitude of services, all geared toward expanding your enjoyment of the hobby. One example is it holds a National Convention each year, and regions sponsor conventions in their areas as well. |
Division 6 History
Prior to 1980 Division 6 consisted of the following areas Wayne, Oakland, St. Clair and Macomb counties and had 800+ members as a whole. In March of 1980 because of concerns of its size and relative inactivity more than likely due to logistic issues and geographic limitations it was decided to further break the division down into 3 subdivisions one for Wayne county, Oakland county and St. Clair/Macomb county. The subdivisions each had between 250-300 NMRA members which was a much more workable size. The Wayne Subdivision, as it came to be known, was loosely organized around local round robin groups of about 20 members. Meetings were held monthly to plan the first event, a model railroad show for November 1980. The show was a success, with near1y 500 persons attending the four-hour event. Membership grew slowly but steadily, and a spring show was held in April 1981. The November 1981 show was again a success, with more new members gained. During this time, a strong sense of fellowship developed, and discussions were held about forming a full division around our present subdivision.
Early in 1982, representatives of the three subdivisions met to discuss the future of Division 6. It was agreed that the Wayne subdivision would become the new Division 6, while Oakland and St. Clair/Macomb would proceed to form new divisions in their respective areas.
The new Division 6 had 40 regular members attending the monthly meetings with new members attending each month. The meetings consisted of business discussions combined with some type of live clinic. Past topics have included: John Allen's Time-Saver in 0 Scale--an operating switching module; Scratchbuilding HO Structures; Demonstration of Scenery Techniques; and Repowering with Can Motors. Also, each month two members opened their layouts on a separate night from the business meeting. The meeting were originally held at Saints Simon & Jude Church at 32500 Palmer Rd. near Venoy in Westland, MI, until they were moved to their current location in the Senior Center in Livonia at 5 Mile & Farmington Road.
